Stream line sales tax seminar
The Chamber has arranged a seminar through the Association of Washington Business to educate members regarding the implementation of SB 5089 – streamline sales tax which takes place July 1, 2008. This workshop will help you learn about destination-based sales tax and how it will affect your business. Topics to be covered include:
Streamline Sales Tax and Use Agreement – why it was adopted and hoe it will change your business
Who is affected by the change
Business Assistance available to help make the change
The seminar will take place on February 6 th at the Silverdale Beach Hotel – West bay Room from 11:30 to 12:30. It will be a no-host lunch. Space is limited, reservations are required. Contact the Silverdale Chamber office to make your reservation. Additional seminar dates will be added should there be a need.
TOYS FOR TOTS UPDATE
SgtMajor Cook of the Marine Security Force Bangor wanted to pass on his personal thanks to the members of the Silverdale Chamber who responded to their December email for assistance for the Toys For Tots campaign.
Donations for the program were down across the country this year but the response from Chamber members after the email went out allowed them to have toys for all the kids in attendance and even some left over!!!

The January membership luncheon will be held on January 30 at the OXFORD SUITES at 11:30. Kitsap County Auditor Jim Avery will be the featured speaker. This is a location change please make a note of it.
As always, reservations PAID FOR by the Thursday prior (Jan 24) will be $17, after that time it is $20. We can not guarantee a lunch unless you make a reservation.

WESTSOUND BUSINESS EXPO
The peninsula area Chambers of Commerce are combining forces for an all-Chamber event to be held on February 13 at the Sun Pavilion at the Kitsap Fairgrounds.
The event will kick off with an all-Chamber Business Showcase with nearly 150 spaces available and the evening will end with some entertainment by the Joey James Dean Band.

The American Red Cross presents Free "CPR Saturday for Teens"
The American Red Cross Serving King & Kitsap Counties is sponsoring a free “CPR Saturday for Teens” on Saturday, January 26 th at Kitsap Mall in Silverdale, with the goal of teaching at least 200 young community members life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills.
CPR Saturday for Teens is geared toward students ages 12 to 18. Classes will be held in selected store spaces at the Kitsap Mall at 8:00AM, 9:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30PM, 2:00PM and 3:30PM. Teens will process through the training requirements and complete the skills testing in about two and a half hours.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive their CPR certification.

The Association of Washington Business has extended an invitation to Chamber members to attend this year's Legislative Day in Olympia scheduled for February 6, 2008, at Saint Martin's Pavilion in Lacey. Historically this is one of the largest networking events held during the legislative session.

Mobile technology and RSS feeds enhance legislative tracking
Thanks to modern technology, you can now use your PDA or cell phone to track bill summaries, committee agendas and meeting schedules for the 2008 Washington legislative session. You can also find your legislator and search for bill sponsors active in the current biennium. RSS feeds are also available, allowing you to track a number of bills through your RSS reader without visiting the Web page for each bill separately. Workers' comp rate holiday over, rates go up
Washington's highest-in-the-nation minimum wage jumped to $8.07 per hour on Jan. 1. Workers' compensation rates also grew and the Medical Aid Fund rate holiday ended, raising rates an average of 3.2 percent. This represents an average 4.5 percent decrease in the Accident Fund premium, an average 10.5-percent increase in the Medical Aid Fund, and an average 17.1 percent increase in the supplemental pension fund. Olympic Business Exchange Issues Request for Proposals to Charity Organizations
Olympic Business Exchange (OBE), a chapter of Business Network International (BNI), will offer pro bono business advisory services to one non-profit organization during 2008. Advisory services may include financial, marketing, real estate, wellness and more, depending upon the needs of the organization and the expertise available within OBE's membership.
Interested charity organizations must:
complete and submit an application;
be not-for-profit;
work to improve lives or the environment in Silverdale (additional areas of influence okay);
have a representative available to serve as the liaison between the organization and Olympic Business Exchange;
attend at least one Olympic Business Exchange meeting at or near the start of its business relationship with Olympic Business Exchange; and
permit a representative from Olympic Business Exchange to attend at least one of their board meetings.
